The Department of English I at the University of Cologne offers several degree programs in English and American Studies. Our student Council is responisble for the students of the following courses. 

Each degree program at the University of Cologne is organized into modules, which group courses with similar topics or learning goals. The Module Guide (Modulhandbuch) contains in depth information about the courses, exams  and modules you need to complete.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) 

English Studies 

Main focus: English and American literature, linguistics, academic writing, and cultural studies

Duration: 6 semesters

Studied in combination with another subject

Teacher Training 

The Lehramt (teaching degree) is for students who want to become teachers at different school types (secondary schools, vocational schools) 

Main focus: English and American literature, linguistics, academic writing, and cultural studies, didactics 

Duration: 6 semesters

Studied in combination with another subject

Master of Arts (M.A.) 

At the University of Cologne, you can pursue English Studies in two ways:

• as a single-subject Master (Ein-Fach-Master), or
• as part of a two-subject Master (Zwei-Fach-Master), in combination with a second subject.

Master of Education (M.A.) 

For those continuing in the teaching track, the M.Ed. prepares students for the Referendariat (teacher traineeship). It deepens subject knowledge and teaching skills.
